Objective

To demonstrate the relevance of Mathematics to working in a local motor business through a variety of stimulating practical activities.

Details

Ideal Group Size: 10 students + 2 staff.

Year Group: Year 11 or Year 12

Summary

  • Group and staff members arrive at TTS and are given a safety briefing.
  • Students are given a snack in the canteen.
  • Group is divided into 2 smaller groups of equal size.
  • Group A goes to Workshop 1 and actively participates in an activity which demonstrates the relevance of geometry to wheel alignment and wheel balancing (30-40 mins).
  • Group B goes to Workshop 3 and actively participates in an activity which demonstrates the relevance of algebra in paint mixing and spraying (30-40 mins).
  • Groups then swap over and undertake the second activity.

Notes

  • School are sent a copy of Risk Assessment in advance of visit.
  • TTS to provide all necessary PPE.
  • School staff to remain with and closely supervise students at all times.
  • All TTS staff are Access NI cleared.
  • Sessions can be morning or afternoon.
  • Total time of visit – 2 hours 30 mins (max).
